Ransomware is a type of malware that locks you out of your computer or files until you pay a ransom. This can be a very frightening experience, as you may not be able to access your important files or even your entire computer. In this article, we will discuss the five most common types of ransomware and what you can do to protect yourself from them.

    Locker Ransomware

Locker ransomware is a type of virus that encrypts your files and holds them hostage until you pay a ransom. You will be locked out of your computer and will only have access to a locked screen. This can be a very scary experience, especially if you have important files that you can’t afford to lose.

Fortunately, there are some things you can do to protect yourself from this type of malware. First, always keep a backup of your important files. That way, even if your computer gets infected, you’ll still have a copy of your data. Second, make sure you have a good antivirus program installed and running. This will help to detect and remove various types of malware before they can do any damage.

  1. Scareware

Scareware is a type of malicious software that tries to trick users into paying for unnecessary or fake security products. It typically takes the form of a pop-up warning that claims your computer is infected with a virus or other malware. The message may look like it comes from a legitimate security company, and it may even use scare tactics, such as warnings of identity theft or financial damage. In some cases, the message may even prevent you from using your computer until you take action.

  1. Leakware

Leakware is similar to ransomware with the exception that the attacker threatens to leak the data taken for ransom rather than hold it. This type of attack is usually aimed at large organizations such as banks and national institutions.  The attacker will send a message to the organization, demanding a ransom be paid to prevent the data from being leaked. This can be a very difficult decision for organizations to make, as they must weigh the risk of paying the ransom against the possible damage that could be caused by the leak. If you are an individual, you are unlikely to be a target of leakware.

  1. Ransomware As a Service (RaaS)

This type of cryptoviral extortion is for attackers with little knowledge of coding, as they can hire more experienced hackers to carry out malware attacks on their behalf.  The attacker will usually pay a percentage of the ransom to the person carrying out the attack. RaaS allows anyone with enough money to pay for an attack, even if they don’t have the technical skills to carry it out themselves. This type of malware is becoming increasingly common and can be very difficult to protect yourself against.

Conclusion

Ransomware is a type of malware that can be very dangerous. There are many different types of malware, but the four most common are locker, scareware, leakware, and RaaS. You can protect yourself from many types of malware by keeping your important files backed up and being careful about what websites you visit and what email attachments you open.
