Working out our careers can be difficult, but sometimes all it takes is some help from a parent to discover a passion early on. If you have kids and want them to do well in life, then you may be wondering what to gently nudge them towards. We suggest technology.
Careers in tech earn big bucks – £37,000 more than the average worker in the UK, according to Hired. And what’s more, jobs in the field are growing, the City and Guilds Group reported in June 2021 that tech and digital job role postings increased by 21% between April 2020 and April 2021.
Tech jobs have a sunny outlook, but how can you inspire your kid to get a job in the industry? Here’s how.
Start early
It’s never too early to start exploring science and technology with your kids. For most, online environments are the easiest way to explore in a fun way, through games and videos that introduce them to topics like the internet, e-safety, coding, and more. You don’t always have to teach them with screens, of course: developing fine motor skills through arts and crafts, or problem solving through puzzles and games, are both great ways to spark interest early.
Join a club
Plenty of schools and community groups offer after-school or weekend Code Clubs for kids. At these sessions, kids can learn about tech and coding in a fun, communal atmosphere with their friends – the perfect way to learn what can be quite a difficult and intimidating topic.
Pick the right toys and tools
If you’re trying to get your younger child into tech, take a look at what STEM (science, technology, engineering, and maths) toys are available – most good toy shops should have one. For older kids, DIY tech systems like the BBC micro:bit are also perfect. With these minicomputers, you and your child can work together on a bigger project, combining coding with peripherals like sensors and tools.
Keep it fun
More important than anything else, keep it fun! You don’t want to bore kids or give them information overload, but rather awaken the problem-solving parts of their brains. Even gaming is a good way to get them introduced to tech, particularly if they are on PC, where they will be able to work on lots of other information communication technology (ICT) skills.
